Ouch!

DentistThith morning I went to the dentitht and my mouth ith till thwollen.

The good newth ith that enough thwelling hath come down that my face ith not totally lop thided anymore.

Those guys were pretty good.  I didn’t feel a thing while they had my jaw unhinged and propped open like a trap door.  But now that they’re done…  Ouch!  I have to be very careful so I don’t bite my tongue.  Boy am I glad this isn’t a phone conversation.

When I went in for my dental check up, the dentist said that one of my old fillings had reached the end of its natural life and needed to be replaced.  I thought I’d take the opportunity to get rid of all of my silver amalgum fillings.  I knew it would take more time but once already numb, why not get it over with?  Right? Except the brilliant scheduler forgot to list one of the fillings for replacement.  That translates into one more visit involving a Novocaine-like substance and a needle.  She admitted her mistake and apologized.  I accepted.  But I’m not happy about it.  And on a somewhat related note, how come I never find a dentist who gives laughing gas instead of Novocaine?  It sounds like a lot of fun.

Anyway, I’m here relaxing with an ice cold can of soda… strapped to the side of my face to ease the discomfort.  This dentist is pretty modern with 360 degree x-rays and cable Tv on the ceiling with headphones so you can be entertained while they jack hammer away at your smile.  But Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat!  They are expensive.

Although my last dentist used a Polaroid for x-rays, whisky and a pliers for repairs, and had an orchid painted on the ceiling for you to look at during your torture session-  at least he didn’t stick you with out-of-pocket fees when the insurance company discounted procedures.  So my face feels heavy and my wallet is light.

Bonus:  I get free whitening.  They made an impression of my mouth and made clear trays that look something like Invisaline braces to put the bleach in.  They also gave me the impressions of my teeth.  It looks like a set of clay dentures.  I think I’ll paint the teeth white with liquid paper.  (Their plan to distract me with party favors is obviously working.)  I probably shouldn’t have mentioned the free whitening.  Someone will probably see me after reading this and ask why my teeth are still yellow.  Any how…

The first round is done – two more to go.  Don’t you just LOOOVE going to the dentist *virtual voice dripping with sarcasm*?  Have you ever had laughing gas (nitrous oxide) instead of Novocaine?  What was that like? Inquiring minds like mine want to know!

i’m terribly frightened of the dentist…i haven’t gone in the longest time even though i need fillings replaced for this reason. do they do laughing gas anymore? for me, one of the biggest problems is the big needles in my mouth…anywhere else is fine, but it reallllyy hurts in your mouth!
i would do sedation dentistry, but i guess that can be expensive and insurance usually doesn’t cover it 😦

I will say this, the needles were not as bad as I remember from the past, but it still wasn’t the most fun way I could think of to spend my morning. I’ve never heard of anyone I know having laughing gas. Is it just something they show in the movies?

Hey Era – I shared the joy of spending a morning at the dentist myself – however I have been only pricked by needles. The laughing gas alternate does sound like fun though! Hope the thwelling ith down and you can eat normally again!

I got an IV when they took out my wisdom tooth, if I remember correctly. I think I told the dentist, “I feel dizzy”, and the next thing I remember I was waking up on a cot in the back room with no more tooth.

Sounds like a very calm experience. Wisdom tooth extraction is serious business so I’m glad you were able to “sleep” through it.

Oh I agree, I am dying with curiosity about the laughing gas — picturing Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins!

Ha ha!!! You just put a big smile on my face. That was always one of my favorite scenes from the movie.

I had laughing gas when I got a root canal. I’ve got bad news for you–you still have to use the Novacaine. The gas “takes the edge off” mostly to just make you less impatient to get out of the chair, since the root canal is a fairly long procedure. It doesn’t make it pain-free. Sorry

I think my mom made them give that to us when we were little growing up in NYC. Crazy dreams I remember. I had a fear of going to the dentist! I still do not like it!

I had laughing gas back in 1992. I really don’t remember the experience since it was sooo long ago.

When it comes to the dentist not remembering is good, but I’m starting to think the gas itself isn’t a barrel of laughs. Good to hear from you again. It’s been along time.

Just THINKING about the dentist breaks me out in a cold sweat!! I hate going there. I need another crown. I will have both laughing gas and oral sedative. Husband has to take me and tries to not make fun of me when I ask him the same questions over and over whilst coming out of it.

    I’m getting freaked out now.

My 10 yr has to put in a fillinf and a space mantainer. She was given nitrous. She said she was dizzy.

I remember being given it when labour with my 3rd child. The baby was already coming out and I couldnt control the pushing urge and the doc was nowhere in sigh.

I was given the gas and my the head of bed was lowered tand my feet were up high. I was told to take deep breaths in the gas mask. I remember being all woozy and even the doc was standing right in fron of it, I was screaming where is the doc.

OK, I’m starting to think the gas thing is not as much fun as it sounds. I’m glad everything worked out for you, I’ve seen the pictures of your gorgeous kids.

    Argh!

The jackhammer clip art looks like the dentist I go to. I believe all dentists are Nazi trained. My last dentist was even German. How fear inspiring do you think that was for me when he walked in & introduced himself with his German accent & German sounding name. Needles in mouths are just stuff nightmares are made of. You should post a photo of your dental impressions
