The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 12:21 am 22 comments

Is it just me, or does the rest of the year go into overdrive once Thanksgiving is over?

While the holidays are magical, and fun, and all that other good stuff, sometimes it just seems like a pressure cooker of activity.  Decorating must be done, school projects become due; school concerts and plays require preparation and practice sessions.  It’s all go Go GO!!!

My fifth grader had to build a catapult capable of throwing a ping-pong ball 15 feet (with reasonable accuracy) and my eighth grader has designed and must now make a dress for theater arts.  While I really do let the kids tackle their own projects,  a good amount of parental involvement is still required.

Now this might sound like I’m blaming the school for forcing me to spend quality time with my children.  Not so.  I appreciate the way these activities ignite their creativity, expand their capabilities and enhance their problem solving skills.  Projects of this caliber which require lumber and textiles can be pricey, but spending time with your little ones and surviving the creative process – priceless.

I completely divested myself of all catapult building responsibility.  I told Hubby to take the boy and go build a catapult.  They went to Home Depot and spent some quality time bonding over building materials.  They used the “saw it yourself center”.  Only one of them came back slightly injured and it wasn’t the boy, so I would say that went pretty well.

These are the supplies.

This is the finished catapult.  Believe it or not, it actually works.

This is the dress making project.

This is her sketch.

This is the finished dress.  True it’s not Dulce & Gabbana, but for a first attempt – we’re fine with it.

What’s your holiday schedule look like?

Wow!!! That’s a full plate! And you have four kids. Though I have to admit a report on Diwali sounds pretty cool. I was also stressed out about what to wear to Hubby’s office party. However, it was so cold when I got there (mostly evening outdoor garden party) that I never took off my coat. I feel like I can wear the same dress next year and no one will know. Maybe I should just get a different coat 🙂 .

Moving?! Ok, I just did that so I know what you must be going through. Are you moving out of state? Wishing you all the best with the move and a Happy Holiday Season!

It’s just crazy around here and we haven’t even had time to consider the actual holiday part of it. We’re just trying to survive the end of the school season :). Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

ugh on the catapult. last year my son happened to mention the catapult project the NIGHT BEFORE IT WAS DUE!! I was not impressed, and I had no money. only Wal Mart was open that late. I called my dad, and he walked me through a popcicle stick, rubberband version. **sigh**

love the dress!!! she did AWESOME!

That catapult project was tough, especially since it is such a busy time of the year that we had to do it last minute. We had my son do research and development early on, but Hubby wasn’t free then. Other kids had these great elaborate catapults compared to ours but I’m just glad ours worked. Happy Holidays to you and yours Emma!

Me either. They had a class devoted to firing them. I’m surprised the administrators weren’t concerned about someone getting an eye put out. Seasons Greetings!

First, beautiful daughter and beautiful dress! The catapult looks right on target (teehee). 🙂 I’m going to prep gingerbread houses for my 6 year old niece’s school this morning. Dinner tonight with family that is in from out of town, coffee in the morning tomorrow with a friend, lunch with girlfriends tomorrow, dinner with book club on Wednesday, cookie exchange get together on Friday – shopping, wrapping, baking, plus all the normal chores. I know those of you with school age children have a lot more on your plates. Be sure to stop and enjoy when you can!

Bethany’s dance studio did their version of the Nutcracker last weekend – rehearsals & show took care of that weekend.

Took the 2 year old to visit my parents this past weekend (4.5 hour drive) coming home just in time for the christmas choir practice then straight to doing tech support for a christmas program. tonight is musician practice for next sunday (I’m running sound for the rehearsal) then choir & musicians on sat, church on sunday. Ben’s finals end this week, then he’ll be home for a month.

Still haven’t shopped or even written the christmas letter. And everything else has to keep on keeping on

This time of year i’m reminded of the chinese circus acts with the spinning plates on the sticks. Man, I’m losing some plates this year.

    love the catapult and dress!

We’re spending the week of Christmas in New York, so I guess I have to pack, stop the mail, check in online so we avoid the extra $5 (airport checked bag) for each checked bag. Oh yes, I also plan to do a little shopping before I go.
