A Perfect Storm

Monday, December 7, 2009 at 3:23 am 22 comments

For days the newscasters had been hyping it up.  Residents prepared for hazardous driving conditions and there was even talk of possible school closures.  I felt like I was back in Florida for hurricane season.

The big event?  Impending snow in Austin!  I know.  Yes, I know.  I can hear the snickering and feel the eye rolling from those of you who live in northern climes with legitimate snow.  But bear with me.  This is a big deal for those of us who hail from the tropics.

It was beautiful.  Soft snow flakes fell like molted feathers from angels’ wings and drifted and twirled to the ground.  Only thing is, 35 degrees (F) is not cold enough to sustain any accumulation on the ground.  So while the flurry lasted for about an hour, at the end of the hour there was absolutely no evidence that it had snowed.  Although I had witnessed it first hand, I wondered, “was it just a dream?”

Now if you get out your electron microscope, you can see little white dots – especially in front of the fence.

After about ten minutes, I found glaring evidence of snow fall.

I did my best to capture this brief interlude for posterity but about two seconds after falling,  all the snow had disappeared.  No white Christmas here.  But before you start to feel sorry for us, realize this solemn truth.  This was the perfect storm.

A little magical flurry, the exhilarating feeling of soft flakes falling on your face, a gray shrouded sky, cool crisp air and then…  no shovelling driveways or salting sidewalks.  In fact, the sun came out as we hadn’t seen it in days and just like that, took us from 35 degrees (F) to 45 degrees (F) in about 60 seconds flat.  I’ll still be dreaming of a white Christmas, but I’ll be pretty warm while I’m dreamin’!

Please enjoy the most non thrilling 42 seconds of your life as you watch this video of Austin snow fall on Friday December 4th, 2009.

Imagine if they had cancelled school for this.  That would have been hilarious!

How fun for you. Definitely the best kind of snow. Big & fluffy and then gone. We had a few tiny flakes here, but mostly misty rain for my part of Kansas.

Yeah, it’s been raining and super foggy here all weekend too.

I feel your pain with the non-event! My youngest daughter actually got out of school early but we also dropped down to about 28 degrees. About 5 minutes up the road from us the snow stuck but just not at my house! 😦

So looks like all southeners had some snow before we got the real snow, the kind that actually stays in the ground for months and months together ! lol

Our little “snow” must be very comical for you northerners, lol.

My wife says Long Island would basically shut down if they got five inches of snow. In upstate New York, we call five inches a light dusting!

Just a dusting, huh. I can imagine all the snowmen we could make with 5 whole inches!

You all need to get ready to have some real storms come your way. I hear that tooo much snow can be a big mess to clean! We have a lot of work at our mountain home because we can not even get to it when it snows! We have to use the snow blower! Hilarious to watch my kids using it! I hope you have many days of playing in the snow. Dress warm! Never listen to the news. It will snow, even if you do not expect it! LOL 🙂

how cute! my cousins grew up in TN, and if they got more than an inch there were school delays. mostly because of the shortage of snow plows. no need to have a lot of snow plows when it hardly snows.

Perfect storm is right Era. You get to enjoy the beauty of the falling snow and don’t have to shovel it or worry about slipping and falling. Yep, you just can’t beat that! 😀

It would be nice to get a little more but I don’t want to be greedy 🙂

I wish our snow hadn’t vanished so quickly, but I guess I should be glad we at least had some. Who knows, maybe next year?
