Not to Toot My Own Horn or Anything

I’ve been posting about how busy the holiday season has been so far.  The school band just made it that much busier.

I have two students in the school band.  One is in her third year of  playing clarinet and the other has begun learning the trombone.  She’s been playing the trombone for about two months now.  It always amazes me how school band directors are able to take a bunch of kids who’ve never played an instrument before and teach them enough to put on a concert for doting parents.

The music deparment  at the school had a brilliant idea – at least THEY think it’s brilliant.  The directors have arranged a winter concert to showcase the beginning band’s hard work – but they have added a little something extra to the program.  Each new band member is to teach one of their parents to play a song on their instrument.  The parents will then perform on stage at the concert.

I don’t know about the other parents, but I’ve never played trombone in my life.  I get the feeling they are trying to make a spectacle of us.  According to the band director, they are trying to instill a deep sense of respect in us parents for what our children do.  UNCLE!  I said UNCLE!  I have a profound respect for what these kids do – especially after trying to learn a song on the instrument myself.  After agreeing to be the musically embarassed parental unit, I thought “why not complete the picture and embarass myself on my blog also?”  The brilliant ideas just keep flowing around here.

So ladies and gentlemen, here I am tortureing  serenading you with my rendition of Jingle Bells on trombone.  Seasons Greetings!

My eyes weren’t closed, I was reading the music that was just in front of me.  Not that this bit of information made it sound any better.  Have no fear.  From now on I’ll stick to just listening to music 😉 .

Are you kidding me Era! Looks like you can get on the band yourself! Awesome job – you are going to be far from embarrassing yourself! Happy Holidays.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but a live performance is a much different thing when nerves kick in 🙂 . Happy Holidays!

Era, I loved it. And so did Anna. She was listening, too, saying, “A song, a song!”

    Very cool.

Wow. I am teaching myself the keyboard as my son learns, but if anyone were to ask me to give a public performance, I did faint….
I admire your bravery and wish you luck!

Thanks, but this was not the one and only time I picked up the instrument. She’s been teaching me over the course of a week. Luckily low brass instruments sit towards the back so I will be invisible 🙂 . Seasons Greetings!

    You did an amazing job!!!
Our niece had to teach her Mom to play Jingle Bells on the flute by Dec. 10th. I still haven’t heard how it went.

Thanks, Jean. It was a humbling experience for me. Some days I would get the sound of notes and the next day just the sound of rushing wind, lol.
