Whataburger LogoSymbiosis is a phenomenon in which different species maintain a close and  often long term relationship with one another for the good of one or both organisms.

Why does the first line of this post read like a third grade science report?  Because I just came from the DMV, of course!

The Department of Motor Vehicles is the one place where even President Obama could be made to wait.  (No, not really.  I was just looking for a gross exaggeration.)  But what does this have to do with symbiosis?  Well, right next to the downtown DMV is a WhataBurger (pronounced w-aa-ter-burger in Texas). This still sounds hokey, you say?  Well, keep reading.

While waiting in line to get a Texas driver’s license, Hubby and I decided that we might as well go have breakfast at the nearby Whataburger and come back.  We had numbers A47 and A48.  When we first entered the line an hour before, the person with number A20 was being served.  The line had since progressed to A29.  We had time.

That WhataBurger was hopping.  It was full of escapees  customers from the  DMV line.  I wonder if  the WhataBurger management gives the DMV a kickback for providing them with such  “captive” clientele?  The slower the DMV line, the more customers at the WhataBurger.  The fact that there is a WhataBurger nearby for diversion, means less people complaining about the DMV line.  It’s the perfect set up.

By the time we finished our breakfast burritos and headed back to the waiting area, they were serving A 31.  What can I say?  It was a slow line.

Now to be fair…  this was hardly the worst DMV experience I’ve ever had.  I’ve spent up to six hours at the  Miami DMV- and that was after arriving an hour before they opened.  Here we were able to sit most of our wait time and the process only took about three hours, including our breakfast excursion.

Sometimes the DMV process is quick if you go about an hour before they close.  We were already out of the house at the crack of dawn to get our cars registered (which only took about twenty minutes) so we decided to try our luck at the DMV.

What did we come away from this experience with?  A photo copy of the information that will be on our actual licenses when we get them in about 6-8 weeks.  6-8 weeks?!!!  That’s a lot of free time to spend at WhataBurger.

In general I have nothing to complain about… unless it’s a situation I caused 🙂

It would be a better set up if they served food to those queuing at the BMV! They could really rake in the revenue!

Great business opportunity indeed, but they don’t allow food and drink in there.

The repast surely made a difference. Otherwise I might have left and kept on driving with my renegade FL license.

Sounds like one heck of a lace to visit. A31??? You could’ve went back for another burger or a coffee maybe

Ummm… That should read “Place to visit”. I doubt they sell lace at the DMV or Whataburger

    • 17. Era  |  Friday, August 21, 2009 at 6:49 pm

It was so freezing inside both places that when I saw they were only on A31, I went and sat in my piping hot car for about 10 minutes. Great warm up, but after a while I was glad to be back in the airconditioned DMV.

No, no lace there – and I didn’t even get my real license yet. You should see the look on peoples faces when they ask for ID and I hand them a photocopy.
