The Last Supper…No, not that one!

Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 5:34 am 32 comments

The Last SupperThe ambient lighting in the restaurant is warm and inviting as enticing aromas make sweet promises of the meal to come.  The mood is high, yet – unexpectedly – the conversation turns cold.  Somehow, there in that pleasant setting, the realization that our lives will probably never be the same takes hold.

The stress level reaches an all time high.  Everyone senses the ominous clouds looming overhead.  For each protagonist the clouds take on a different form, but the results are all the same.  No one knows what the other is feeling.  But how can they?  How do you grasp someone else’s feelings, when you can’t identify your own?

What’s it like to be told that your office is being closed – your livelihood suddenly threatened?  How do you cope when faced with the prospect of leaving behind the school, the home… the friends that you’ve known your entire life?  Where do you find the glue to piece together everyone’s broken hopes and dreams when you know the’re all looking to you?  How do you grieve when your sadness is confused?

Then it happens.  It starts on one side of the table and works it’s way around to the other.  Silent teardrops begin to fall.

I whisper to my son that it’s OK to cry.  I reveal that I want to cry too, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.  I invite him to meet me later so we can have a good cry together.  My efforts are rewarded with a faint smile.  In another pathetic attempt to diffuse the situation, I announce that I could use a trip to the restroom and ask  the girls if they would like to join me.  They shake their heads and dab their eyes with their napkins.  We stay put.

Again I struggle to improve the tone, this time by discussing the dance off that occurred the previous night on “So You Think You Can Dance”.  It took some doing, but slowly the mood in the room changes and the clouds begin  to lift.  Shortly thereafter, my now composed daughters excuse themselves from the table and head for the restroom.  At that moment, seeing them walk away together – chatting the whole way, it suddenly dawns on me:  they have each other.  And I’m so glad that they do.

PS:  Tomorrow my mood will be better.  Don’t let me scare you away!

Moving’s never fun, but you all have each other! And your friends, they’re not going to be physically close, but good friends aren’t just an accident of geography. Hugs, and I hope the move goes smoothly!

Thanks for reminding me of that. And you’re so right about “good friends not being an accident of geography”. I feel very fortunate that I can take all of my blog friends with me.

I’ve known you for only a short time, Era. But I’ve learned this. If your family is looking to you for strength, they are looking in the right direction.

Think of new friends you will make, how the old ones will visit and you can then show them around your new life and make them a part of it all over again.

I just hate moving and I’m so sorry for you. But I do agree with the other above, you have such a good outlook and positive attitude and I’m sure you will do all you can to reassure your kids. Look what happened here. All very good. Moving sucks though.

I can only look at it like this. We have such good resources now to keep up to date with all our friends no matter how many miles separate us. Even say 10 years ago, not everyone had a computer to be able to do this. I have so many very dear relatives and friends and we all gather many times a day on Facebook. We have our blogs and we have very good tools for emailing. I have no doubt you’ll be in touch with those you love and want to stay close to. Just think, you can go back to visit and have a free place to stay. Try and stay positive. Things will be better when you’re feeling more settled.

I’m very sorry to hear about the situation. Moves are always hardest on the kids. But, just remind them that it is a new, exciting opportunity to meet new people and enjoy new experiences… 🙂

And, I agree with Joy. With your positive attitude, I’m sure you will have your kids convinced that things are not so bad after all…

This really can be a great experience for us. But it’s taking time for me to wrap my mind around it. I’ve been in Florida for 15 years… We’ll get through it 🙂

I have moved many times you probably wouldn’t believe ii if I told you how many. More often then not it has been a positive thing meeting new friends, new opportunities. A chance to begin a new, I hope this for you.;+) I know it can be hard on kids. I think it’s great that you have been encouraging them to feel their feelings about this situation.

I’ve moved three cities in five years now. It is a bummer- but, the kids will adjust better that adults. They will find new friends, new places, and the excitement of all things new.

It is for you to start thinking about this as a new beginning. They will react to the move , the way you do. So be strong, whatever happens, is for good. May god be with you during tough times.

Thank you so much for the encouragement. This situation certainly isn’t unique to our family and it’s nice to hear from moving veterans. I’m amazed at how long it’s taking for the realization or acceptance that it is happening to set in. On to our next chapter!
