Battle of the Books
My last two posts focused on Jasmine and Heather. Well, the “Proud Mommy Alert” remains in effect for one more day. Not to be outdone, my fourth grader Arvind is making a name for himself. Also an honor roll student, he won Battle of the Books during the 2007-2008 school year.
The SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) program is a reading initiative in the state of Florida. Each year several books (approximately thirteen) are assigned and students who accept the challenge read all or as many of the books as they can. Those who read all of the books are invited to participate in a contest known as Battle of the Books. The challenge is similar to the game show Jeopardy. Students compete against one another to provide answers to questions about each book.
The challenge is open to third through fifth graders. While in third grade, Arvind completed all the books for that year and won the top prize.
The competition and award presentations took place during school time, hence the absence of the cheerleading squad. Let’s just say we were pleasantly surprised when he got home that day.
PS: I only have three kids, so this is the last installment in the series 🙂 . If this all looks too good to be true, take a look at Crime and Punishment for the fair and balanced “keeping it real” perspective on what goes on at our house.
