India Is …

Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 2:00 am 30 comments

You know me, where there is one proud mommy moment there are three.  Yesterday I shared Heather’s proud moment, and today I share Jasmine’s.  Tomorrow,  it’s Arvind’s turn.

Jasmine was honored at the Sixth-Grade Honors Night for the 2007 – 2008 school year.  She was recognized not only for being an honor roll student and member of the band, but also for her writing, poetry, and art.

The title of this post,  “India Is…” , is also the title of a poem that Jasmine wrote commemorating her visits to India.  Ladies and Gentlemen I present “India Is…” by Jasmine Sundar.

India Is…

India is…
a local food stand frying batter on a skillet.

India is…
a crowded intersection with nowhere to go.

India is…
a pretty dancer dancing to peaceful music in front of her gods.

India is…
smells of home made cooking gushing out the window at lunchtime.

India is…
southern Asia.

India is …
holy music surrounding neighborhood after neighborhood to start off the day.

India is…
smells of incense filling patti’s [grandma’s] house on Saturdays.

India is…
pools of people surrounding performing monkeys outside the Taj Mahal.

India is…
a man with a fruit cart turning the corner yelling “Fruit! Fruit!” on a hot summer day.

India is…
children playing cricket on the neighborhood clay roads.

India is…
long hair covered with flowers on Holi.

India is…
music booming out of young teens’ fancy cars.

India is…
vibrantly colored water splashing on people and dripping on the ground [Holi celebration]

India is…
where my heart is.

Thanks Cindy. I’ll convey your congrats to Jasmine. The kids really do enjoy themselves in India. Every time the cousins meet it doesn’t seem like years since they last saw each other.

You are too kind – really. I’m just here to make sure they don’t put foil paper in the microwave and burn the house down. Thanks Sudharsana, and I’ll pass the kudos on to Jasmine :).

And the third, or the first, depending on the order you choose, Hurrah is for Jasmine… I loved her many definitions of India – made me nostalgic for the home I grew up in Chennai!
Congratulations to the proud parents too! It must be a marvelous feeling to have three amazing children!
